The idea for a 'Grandmothers' group composed of ex-members of the Mothers was first muted by Herb Cohen in 1970, probably at Frank Zappa’s instigation. But it was in 1980 that the band first came together to record and then to tour, kicking off in 1981 with gigs in the States Then two tours of Europe before internal wrangling saw the group disband Jimmy resurrected the band in the late 80's, styled the 'Austin Grandmothers' and composed of Austin based musicians In this guise, they released the Dreams on Long Play album in 1993 Reformed, the Grandmothers toured Europe extensively during 1993 & 1994 A Grandmothers 'Power Trio' toured Germany in 1997, then in 1998 the beefed-up 'European' Grandmothers toured Europe In 2000 the Grandmothers conducted a monster tour of Europe and the US This was Jimmy's last tour with the Grandmothers - until this time he had been the one continuous member of the 'Grandmothers' brand | |||
